St. Mary’s Independent School believes in the physical, social and educational value of sport in schools, and encourages students to aim for a personal best performance. It stresses the need to show respect for others, for high standards of sportsmanship and a sense of fair play. Sport plays a central role in the school’s mission to support and nurture individual students with diverse needs. We believe sport develops students’ confidence and resilience through physical, technical and mental stimulus, and exposure to teamwork and leadership opportunities.
The curriculum is designed to give all students a wide range of experience in the major skill areas. It also encourages an independent approach to improving and maintaining personal fitness, and through Health Related Exercise, promotes an understanding of the relationship between exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
We have many extracurricular activities on offer such as sailing, squash, golf, dance and the use of our fitness suite, which includes treadmills, rowing machines, bikes and weights equipment.
Students also get the chance to compete in a variety of sports for their ‘House’ and, if selected, in numerous fixtures against other schools including cross country, football, rugby, table tennis, indoor rowing, swimming, volleyball, dodgeball, cricket and athletics.
The school’s grounds are immense, with acres of land for students to use to develop their skills and abilities. The school also holds an annual water sports trip, often visiting foreign destinations like La Fosca, and we concluding the year with the our annual Sports day.
