St Mary’s Independent School Prep Department offers everything to stimulate the developing child: the right atmosphere for growing minds, small class sizes and a rich and varied curriculum. Although an emphasis is placed on both English and Mathematics, pupils enjoy specialist teachers for Music, French, PE and Games. As a through-school, our Prep pupils benefit from the fantastic facilities available in the Senior Department and enjoy full use of these including the brand new Computing Suite, fully-equipped Science labs and the newly-designed Art Studio, all of which enhance and extend their learning. Our beautiful grounds mean that outdoor learning is an integral part of the curriculum and teachers ensure that children make good use of the school’s meadow and woodland areas throughout the school year to enhance their learning.
‘Pupils’ learning is enriched by the wide range of extra-curricular activities that the school offers’ (Ofsted 2018) Prep pupils have the opportunity to participate in many clubs including music, dance, drama, art, horse-riding, sailing, swimming and orienteering. The curriculum is further enriched with visits to museums, theatres and other educational facilities and our Year 6 pupils enjoy an outward-bound residential week to the Brecon Beacons.
Visitors are regularly invited to speak to the children to bring topics to life and pupils have enjoyed engaging talks from a variety of professions such as chiropractors, archaeologists, vets, pilots and doctors. Our Prep School Council is run by pupils from Year 2-6 and they are instrumental in creating positive change in the school on behalf of their peers. Together, all of these activities stimulate and challenge our young pupils, helping them to live and work together, preparing them for Senior school.
