Fr. Michael was born and brought up in Portsmouth. After National Service in Germany with the Royal Air Force he joined the Inland Revenue.
A priestly vocation beckoned and following six years of studies in the Royal English College, Valladolid (Spain) he was ordained in 1968 for the Portsmouth Diocese. His priestly ministry took him around Hampshire and Berkshire and also into the Cameroons (West Africa) where he pioneered a twin mission for the bishop.
When he was sent to a Southampton parish in 1989 he combined his pastoral work with part-time chaplaincies in St. George’s, Springhill and Charlton House. Six years later he added St. Mary’s to his schedule.
He retired from parish work in 2001 and has lived on the St Mary’s site giving the majority of his time to the St Mary’s community while helping as a locum to nearby parishes.
