St Mary’s Independent School has a broad, exciting and diverse Creative Arts curriculum that compliments and challenges creative thinking and talent.
In the Art department we develop individual creativity through our wealth of resources and expertise. We provide tuition in a wide range of forms; painting, clay modelling, collage, pastel work and observational drawing. Art work is placed into context and classical artists are taught alongside modern artists. Art Theory is explored and we delve into the artists’ motivations behind the works that we study.
Whenever possible, the class work is enhanced by visiting external workshops and exhibitions. Professional artists sometimes visit the school, giving us a valuable insight into the life of an artist and illustrating contemporary practice.
The Art department offers a range of weekly clubs and in Art lessons we encourage peer work and support each other to develop ideas and to grow as artists.
Our prep pupils also have the opportunity to regularly visit our senior department Art Studio and have lessons taught by the senior Art teacher. These lessons enable our pupils to develop their skills in specific mediums.
Music plays a key role in the life of the Prep department.
Whilst we applaud and encourage individual musical talent, we also aim to instil a firm understanding of working together within the school. Each pupil plays an important part in the process of singing together, whether it is in a Choir or singing a variety of rousing traditional Hymns during Monday assemblies and Masses.
Alongside opportunities to join one of two different Choirs within school, each class has weekly Music lessons.
Our extensive programme of events in the Prep department gives every pupil an opportunity to perform, whether they are a singer, a pianist, or a drummer! This ranges from very informal Lunchtime Concerts to the more formal Summer Concert. Our Prep Nativities and the Carol Services are particular highlights in the school calendar, alongside events such as various charity concerts and in house recitals.
All music lessons are taught by an experienced music teacher.
The numerous extracurricular opportunities for drama at St. Mary’s Prep include a variety of performance related projects, an annual speech competition and a weekly drama club. Years R – 6 have the opportunity to perform in School Nativities in December, gaining confidence on the stage and bringing the whole school community together at Christmas.
In addition to this, pupils use drama techniques within lessons such as role play, improvisation and script writing. Stage management and prop design also form part of the whole drama experience culminating in a bi-annual performance by the Prep School which takes place at the end of the spring term.
The Key Stage 1 drama club, which runs every Thursday lunchtime, is incredibly popular with an external provider also visiting the school once a week to run an after school drama club for Key Stage 2 (Shine Performing Arts).
St Mary’s provides quality dance instruction in a friendly and fun atmosphere. As a school our aim is to develop our students’ confidence, creativity and a love of dance. In addition to the provision on offer during PE lessons, there is also a weekly dance club which runs at lunchtime. This gives our younger students the opportunity to learn dance and teamwork in a supportive, structured environment
