St Mary's students train for a Public Speaking Competition

At the start of the Autumn Term, our Year 10 students enjoyed a challenging day of training provided by a representative of the English Speaking Union. The ESU runs the renowned Public Speaking Competition which St Mary’s has entered for the past four years. The format is a variant on a debating competition, but with slightly different roles for each participant. Our students were put through their paces by a very experienced practitioner who quickly had them all up and giving speeches on challenging topics such as ‘Private Education: Fair or Not?’ and ‘Should Violent Videogames Be Banned?’

Mr O’Farrell hopes that this experience will lead to even greater success in this year’s competition for those who go on to form the team, but knows that the added training in public speaking will be useful to all students in their future careers.
