Speaking Competition

St Mary’s College hosted the first round of the English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition on 1st December and a fine evening was enjoyed by schools from across the county. The St Mary’s College team – Nathan Taylor, Alex Lopez and Annie Ramkumar (all Year 10) – competed exceptionally well against 5 other teams from St Swithuns, Winchester College and Ryde School in the Jean De La Mennais Room.

The event is formal but friendly. Our Chair, Nathan, had the job of introducing and summarising a speech on ‘Greed Is A Positive Force’ by a member of the St Swithuns’ first team. Our ‘Questioner’, Annie, had to listen carefully and then challenge the speaker with a series of questions. Both rose to the occasion admirably. Our Speaker, Alex, was then introduced and questioned in turn by members of the Winchester College second team. Alex’s topic was ‘Should 16 Year Olds Be Allowed To Vote?’ and he spoke with great eloquence and humour, winning a prize for ‘Best Personality’ of the evening.

The event was deservedly won by Winchester College ‘B’ team, but all involved performed extremely well under such daunting conditions. Thanks must also go to Alice Lawton and Lucia Shiner (both Year 10) who acted as official time-keepers for the whole event.
