Public speaking success for St Mary's

St Mary’s College hosted a first-round heat of the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition on Tuesday 6th December and were delighted to have one of their teams selected to progress in the competition to the next round.
The Public Speaking Competition is a formal but friendly variation of the debating contest, with teams made of 3 members each taking on individual roles: chair, speaker and questioner. Mr O’Farrell entered two College formations this year: a Year 10 team (Alessandro Leoni – chair, Emily Cooney – speaker and Jaden King – questioner) and a Year 11 team (Jack Weaver – chair, Annie Ramkumar – speaker and Alex Lopez – questioner).
Both teams performed really well against tough opposition, consisting of entrants from St Swithun’s, The Ryde School and two teams from Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School from Salisbury. The panel of three judges – who said the standard of the event was one of the highest they had ever seen – awarded our Year 11 team second place, just behind Bishop Wordsworth’s ‘A’ team, and Jack, Annie and Alex will now get to compete again at the district final in Salisbury on January 19th.
Thanks and recognition must also go to Alice Lawton and Lucia Shiner, who assisted with the smooth running of the event and acted as official time-keepers for the whole evening
