Parents vs Staff Cricket match
On Friday 10th June parents battled against the staff in a cricket match (with the help of some old and current students). This was to celebrate and officially open the new artificial wicket kindly funded by the Parents Association. The parents batted first with Mr Savage and Alex Roberts making an excellent opening partnership scoring 48 runs before Dylan Kirkwood took the first wicket. Soon after Alex Roberts retired scoring an impressive 28 runs in quick time. Mr Connor, Mr Patel and Mr Kennedy all made valuable contributions to the final total of 114 for 9 in their 20 overs. All the staff bowled at least one over with Harvey Chillana achieving the best figures of 3 wickets for the loss of 12 runs in two overs. His formula of consisting of wide, wide, wicket lulled the batsman into a force sense of security – this tactic was employed successfully in both of his overs! Dylan Kirkwood took two wickets, with Mr Adams, Mr Sadler and Mr Cheeseman taking the rest. Moreover, Dr K was on good form behind the stumps taking several catches. Mr O’Farrell, Mr Hyde, Mr Rolph, Sam Kirkwood and Jaz Chillan all managed to keep the run rate down bowling the rest of the overs.
In response, the parents started fantastically well with Mr Adamson taking two wickets in the first over. Mr Sadler and Mr Cheeseman steadied the innings seeing off some impressive quick bowling from Alex Roberts and straight bowling from Mr Kennedy. With the run rate ever increasing Mr Sadler and Mr Cheeseman decided it was time to speed things up striking a series of four’s and sixes in a 50 partnership which eventually saw Mr Sadler retire on 30 and Mr Cheeseman being caught out by Mr Kennedy. The job appeared to be complete, however, when Mr Adams retired on 17 to give other staff a chance there was a dramatic batting collapse. With two overs remaining St Mary’s only required 3 runs to win, however, with Mr Adams back in after retiring the parents only needed one more wicket for an unlikely victory. Mr Adams, however, calmly scored the necessary runs seeing the staff over line winning by 2 wickets. Special mentions in the bowling must go to Mr Adamson who took 3 wickets for the loss of only 11 runs in 3.2 overs. The other wicket takers were Mr Patel, Alex Roberts and Taine Pitter (got Mr Cheeseman out after taking some punishment – well done Taine)!
I know the spectators were also very grateful to the parents association who provided delicious cakes in between innings. Thanks must also go to the umpires, Mr Winter and Mr Jennings.
