German Exchange 2010
The German Exchange group returned yesterday from an exciting visit to Hildesheim. For the thrill seekers there was a high octane visit to Heide Park with rides like Scream to satisfy the appetites of the adrenalin junkies. There was plenty of splash-happy fun at Wasserparadies with crazy indulgence on the water slide and many a water fight. For the gourmet there were at least 3 highlights -coffee and cake in Wernigerode, where the most delicious oversized cakes were served to the sweet-toothed youngsters and breakfast at the Knochenhaueramtshaus proved to be a big hit to satisfy young hunger before going swimming. On the last evening a farewell BBQ ensured everyone was given ample opportunity to taste some German Wurst. Wernigerode castle kept the group happy, as they gained a taste of life in times gone by, and a trip up Hannover town hall tower took the group to new heights.
The Exchange is much more than a linguistic experience and it is far from just an ordinary holiday. The students are given a tate of real life in Germany – they even go to school for the day. The students have to make
an effort to be sociable, to eat unusual foods, to work out how things work that they’ve never seen before. For some there was more than just this to deal with – there was homesickness for some, trips to hospital and learning to use German crutches for others. And if that wasn’t enough – there was the challenge of tolerating Harry and Sam’s new German jackets!
