In September, St Mary’s competed in The England Schools Ski Association qualifiers in Southampton. With over 200 children competing from around the south, it was one of the biggest ski race days of the year.
The team of Dan Hutchings, Hannah and Nicole Groves competed in the Year 9 and 10 mixed category, with Nicole making the step up to the older age group. They all skied extremely well and clocked very good times. Dan was placed 7th overall in the boys out of all age categories including colleges, Hannah was 16th and Nicole was 20th in all girls’ age groups.
This fantastic combined effort meant that St Mary’s won the mixed team competition – congratulations Dan, Hannah and Nicole!
Dan also competed in the snow sport south race and came 3rd in the under 16 category, no mean feat considering he is one of the youngest competing in this age group.
In further success for Dan, on the final weekend in September, he took part in the Lowland Championships. This is the biggest indoor skiing competition in the world, contested between GB, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Luxembourg and Ireland.
There were over 400 competitors with Dan taking part in the under 16 category. Being only just 14, Dan managed to secure a very respectable 21st place on the Saturday and 26th place on the Sunday.
Dan said “It was the most difficult conditions and course I have ever skied on.” Everyone at St Mary’s is really proud of his achievement and, alongside his supportive family, we hope he can now qualify for the English Championships in Tignes next year.
